Burn Multiple for Startups: Measure How Much Cash Your Growth Is Consuming

Runway tells you when cash may run out. Burn multiple asks whether the cash you burn is producing enough recurring revenue. Here is how founders can use it without misreading the number.

Two startups can burn ₹50 lakh a month and be in completely different financial positions.Startup A burns ₹50 lakh while adding ₹1 crore of net new annual recurring revenue. Startup B burns the same ₹50 lakh while adding ₹15 lakh of net new ARR.The burn rate is identical. The output from that burn is not. That is the problem burn multiple tries to solve. What is burn multiple?Burn multiple measures how much net cash a recurring-revenue company burns to generate each rupee of net new ARR.The standard formula is:Burn Multiple = Net Burn ÷ Net New ARRThe metric was popularised by investor David Sacks and became widely used in SaaS and venture-backed startup finance because burn rate alone says little about capital efficiency.A simple exampleSuppose a SaaS startup begins a quarter at ₹6 crore ARR and ends at ₹7 crore ARR.Net new ARR = ₹1 crore.During the same quarter, the company consumes ₹1.5 crore of cash from operations.Burn multiple = ₹1.5 crore ÷ ₹1 crore = 1.5x.In plain English, the startup burned ₹1.50 for every ₹1 of net new ARR added during that period. Why founders should track it with runwayRunway answers: “How long can we continue before cash runs out if our burn continues?”Burn multiple asks: “What are we producing with the cash we burn?”MetricMain questionWeaknessBurn rateHow much cash are we consuming?Ignores growth outputRunwayHow long can our cash last?Does not measure efficiencyBurn multipleHow much cash burn creates ₹1 of net new ARR?Works best for recurring-revenue businessesUse the three together. Nitross has a detailed 13-week cash-flow guide for managing short-term liquidity. What counts as net burn? For this metric, use actual cash consumption over the measurement period rather than an accounting loss that includes non-cash items. If cash from operations and relevant operating investment falls by ₹90 lakh during the quarter, use the same-period burn consistently.Do not switch between monthly burn in the numerator and quarterly ARR change in the denominator. What counts as net new ARR?Net new ARR should capture the change in recurring revenue after expansion, churn and contraction.A useful decomposition is:Net New ARR = New Customer ARR + Expansion ARR − Churned ARR − Contraction ARRExample:New customer ARR: ₹1.2 croreExpansion ARR: ₹30 lakhChurned ARR: ₹20 lakhContraction ARR: ₹10 lakhNet new ARR = ₹1.2 crore. If quarterly net burn is ₹1.8 crore, burn multiple is 1.5x.How should you interpret burn multiple?Lower generally means the company is converting cash into recurring-revenue growth more efficiently. But founders should avoid treating internet benchmark bands as universal rules.A very early startup building a product before repeatable sales will naturally look different from a mature SaaS business. A company entering a new market may temporarily increase burn before the revenue arrives. A business with annual enterprise contracts may also have lumpy bookings.Use external benchmarks as context, not as a substitute for understanding your own trend. The trend matters more than one quarterImagine this sequence:QuarterNet burnNet new ARRBurn multipleQ1₹2.4 cr₹0.8 cr3.0xQ2₹2.2 cr₹1.1 cr2.0xQ3₹2.0 cr₹1.6 cr1.25xBurn is falling while net new ARR is rising. That tells a stronger story than the Q3 number alone. Now reverse the sequence. A rising burn multiple may signal that hiring, marketing or infrastructure spend is increasing faster than recurring-revenue output. What can make burn multiple worse?Weak gross marginMore revenue does not help enough if each customer carries heavy delivery or infrastructure cost.Long sales cyclesA team can add sales headcount months before new ARR appears. Track pipeline and sales capacity alongside burn multiple.ChurnYou may be signing new customers while losing enough existing ARR to keep net new ARR low.Over-hiringHiring ahead of proven demand can increase burn immediately while output arrives slowly or never arrives.Uncontrolled cloud and AI costsFor AI products, inference, model APIs and GPU costs can scale faster than revenue if pricing does not reflect usage economics.Discount-led growthARR can rise while future margin and renewal quality deteriorate.A founder diagnosticIf burn multiple worsens for two periods, ask these questions in order:Did net burn rise, net new ARR fall, or both?Is churn reducing net new ARR?Which cost category increased? Was the spending intentional and tied to a measurable growth hypothesis? When should that spending produce revenue? What would make us stop the investment? This turns the metric from an investor talking point into an operating tool.Burn multiple is not for every businessThe metric is most natural for SaaS and recurring-revenue startups because ARR provides a consistent growth denominator.A marketplace, ecommerce brand, project-based agency or hardware startup may be better served by contribution margin, cash conversion, inventory turns, cohort economics or gross-profit growth.Do not force ARR onto a business model that does not have recurring contracted revenue just because investors use the term.A 90-day improvement planDays 1 to 15: fix the inputsReconcile beginning and ending ARR.Separate new, expansion, churn and contraction ARR.Calculate actual net cash burn for the same period.Remove one-off financing flows from operating analysis.Days 16 to 30: identify the leakCalculate gross margin by product or plan.Review CAC payback by channel.Measure logo and revenue churn.Review sales capacity and quota attainment.Find infrastructure costs growing faster than usage revenue.Days 31 to 60: run one efficiency experimentExamples include reducing low-quality paid acquisition, repricing a high-cost plan, improving onboarding for a churn-heavy segment, pausing premature hiring or improving expansion revenue.Days 61 to 90: measure the effectCompare burn, net new ARR, gross margin and runway. Do not declare victory if burn multiple improves only because you stopped investing and growth collapsed.Burn multiple and fundraisingA founder can use burn multiple to explain capital efficiency to investors, but it should sit beside growth, retention, margin and runway. For example:ARR grew 60% year on year.Net revenue retention improved.Gross margin increased.Burn multiple declined from 2.4x to 1.3x.That combination is more informative than saying, “We reduced burn.”When preparing a funding round, connect capital efficiency with dilution and valuation. Nitross also explains pre-money and post-money valuation with worked examples.Common mistakesMixing periods. Quarterly burn divided by monthly net new ARR produces a meaningless ratio.Using bookings instead of recurring revenue. Define ARR consistently.Ignoring churn. Gross new sales are not net new ARR.Optimising the ratio at the cost of the company. Cutting product, security or sales investment can improve short-term burn while damaging future growth.Comparing unlike businesses. A pre-product startup and a scaled SaaS company should not be judged with the same expectation.FAQsWhat is the burn multiple formula?Net cash burn divided by net new ARR for the same period. Is a lower burn multiple better?Generally yes, because it means less cash is being consumed for each unit of net new ARR. Context, stage and growth quality still matter. Can burn multiple be negative? If a company is cash-flow positive or net new ARR is negative, the simple ratio becomes difficult to interpret. Explain the underlying numbers instead of forcing a benchmark.Should bootstrapped startups track burn multiple?A recurring-revenue bootstrapped company can use it, but cash generation, margin and retention may be more directly useful if burn is already near zero. How often should founders calculate it?Quarterly is practical for many startups because monthly ARR and cash movements can be noisy. Use a consistent period. One metric, one useful questionBurn multiple is valuable because it forces a founder to connect spending with output. If you burned ₹1 crore this quarter, what did that ₹1 crore create?More durable recurring revenue? Better retention? A product milestone that unlocks revenue next quarter? Or simply a larger cost base? The formula is simple. The management conversation it creates is the real value.SourcesStandard Ledger, Burn Multiple Explained, September 2026Metricalytics, Burn Multiple formula and calculator
